Sceletium tortuosum Care Guide
Sceletium tortuosum (Kanna) is a South African perennial succulent valued for its drought tolerance and compact habit. It prefers bright light, fast-draining soil, and minimal water once established.
Light
- Best: Full sun to strong bright light (6–8+ hours/day).
- Tolerable: Light afternoon shade in very hot climates.
- Indoors: Place in a south- or west-facing window or under strong grow light.
Soil & Potting
- Mix: Very well-draining mix — e.g., 50% coarse sand or perlite + 30% potting soil + 20% pumice/grit.
- pH: Neutral to slightly alkaline (around 6.5–7.5).
- Potting: Use shallow pots with drainage holes. Repot every 2–3 years or when rootbound.
Watering
- Frequency: Let the top 2–3 cm (0.8–1.2 in) of soil dry between waterings. Water thoroughly, then allow drainage.
- Dormancy/Cold season: Reduce watering significantly in winter.
- Overwatering: Susceptible to root rot — avoid waterlogged conditions.
Temperature & Humidity
- Optimal: 18–28°C (64–82°F).
- Tolerates: Short periods down to ~5–8°C (41–46°F) but avoid freezing.
- Humidity: Prefers low–moderate humidity; good air circulation is beneficial.
Fertilizer
- When: Grow season (spring–summer).
- Type: Balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer (e.g., 10-10-10) at 1/4–1/2 strength.
- Frequency: Every 4–6 weeks during active growth. Do not over-fertilize.
Propagation
- From cuttings: Tip or stem cuttings root readily in coarse, dryish medium; allow cut end to callus 1–2 days, then plant and water sparingly until roots form.
- From seed: Seeds can be slow and erratic; scarify or soak and sow in well-draining mix; keep warm and lightly moist.
Pruning & Maintenance
- Prune: Light trim to shape and remove dead material. Encourage compact growth by pinching tips.
- Pests: Watch for mealybugs, scale, and aphids; treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
- Diseases: Root rot from overwatering is the main issue.
Flowering
- Small tubular flowers in clusters; bloom more reliably with strong light and moderate stress (slightly drier conditions).
Common Problems & Fixes
- Yellow, mushy leaves: Overwatering → cut back water, lift plant, repot in fresh, fast-draining soil.
- Leggy growth: Insufficient light → increase light or move outdoors to sunnier spot.
- Slow/no flowering: Too much fertilizer or shade → reduce feeding and increase light.
