Ephedra sinica Seed Sowing & Care
Quick Overview
Ephedra sinica prefers full sun and dry, sandy soils. Proper pre-treatment and a sandy, well-drained sowing medium improve germination and seedling vigor.
Seed Pre-treatment
- Soak: 48 hours in willow-tip tea or plain, pure water kept in the fridge.
Substrate & Sowing
- Medium: Very sandy potting mix—about 50% coarse, sharp sand (builder’s sand), not beach sand.
- Sowing Depth: Sow soaked seeds on the surface, then cover to a final depth of 1 inch. Planting deeply increases germination rates and provides support against flopping and damping-off.
- Firming: Tamp the surface securely after covering.
Moisture, Temperature & Germination
- Moisture: Keep evenly moist (not waterlogged) until germination.
- Temperature: Warm medium; greenhouse or under propagation lights is ideal.
- Germination Time: 10–30 days under warm, controlled conditions.
