Growing Ilex vomitoria (yaupon holly) From Seed
Breaking dormancy (stratification)
- Cold stratify: Place seeds in a moist medium (peat-perlite or damp paper towel) inside a sealed plastic bag.
- Refrigerate: Keep at 1–5 °C (34–41 °F) for 60–90 days. Check occasionally to ensure medium stays damp and no mold develops.
Sowing
- Timing: Sow after stratification in spring, or sow immediately after stratifying.
- Medium: Use a well-draining seed mix (2 parts peat/perlite or peat/sand).
- Depth: Sow seeds 6–12 mm (1/4–1/2 in) deep or just cover lightly with medium.
- Containers: Use cell packs or small pots with drainage.
Germination conditions
- Temperature: Maintain 20–25 °C (68–77 °F) daytime for best germination.
- Light: Provide bright, indirect light; seeds don’t need deep shade but avoid harsh midday sun on seedlings.
- Moisture: Keep the medium consistently moist but not waterlogged. Use a humidity dome or plastic cover until seedlings emerge.
- Timeframe: Germination can take 4–12 weeks, sometimes longer.
After germination
- Acclimate: Remove cover gradually to reduce humidity after true leaves form.
- Fertilize: Begin with a weak balanced fertilizer (e.g., 1/4 strength) after 2–3 true leaves.
- Transplanting: Move to larger pots when seedlings have several sets of leaves and a well-developed root system.
- Hardening off: Gradually expose to outdoor conditions over 7–14 days before planting out.
Planting out and care
- Site: Full sun to partial shade; yaupon tolerates a wide range of soils including sandy, clay, and alkaline, but prefers well-drained soil.
- Spacing: 1.5–4 m (5–13 ft) between plants depending on use (hedge vs specimen).
- Watering: Regular watering until established; drought-tolerant afterward.
- Pruning: Prune to shape in late winter or early spring; yaupon responds well to pruning.
- Pests/diseases: Generally pest-resistant; monitor for scale or leaf spot occasionally.
Quick tips
- Germination rates vary; sow extra seeds to improve chances.
- You can also propagate yaupon from semi-hardwood cuttings for faster results.
