Sassafras albidum Care Guide
Site & climate
- USDA zones: 4–9 (tolerates cold to warm temperate climates).
- Light: full sun to partial shade; partial shade helps in hot climates.
- Space: plant where it can reach 30–60 ft tall and 20–40 ft wide (smaller in poor soils).
Soil & planting
- Soil: well-draining; tolerates loam, clay, sandy soils; prefers slightly acidic to neutral pH (5.5–7.0).
- Amend planting hole with compost if soil is poor; do not bury root flare.
- Planting time: early spring or fall.
- Mulch 2–4 inches around base, keeping mulch away from trunk.
Watering
- Establishment (first 1–2 years): keep soil consistently moist (water weekly or more in dry spells).
- Once established: moderately drought-tolerant; water during prolonged dry periods.
Fertilizing
- Generally low-fertilizer; apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring only if growth is poor.
- Avoid high-nitrogen feeds that promote weak, leggy growth.
Pruning & training
- Prune in late winter to remove dead, crossing, or weak branches.
- Light formative pruning when young to establish a strong central leader if desired.
- Avoid heavy pruning; sassafras resprouts readily.
Pests & diseases
- Pests: occasional scale, borers, or caterpillars—monitor; treat localized infestations with horticultural oil or appropriate insecticides.
- Diseases: root rot in poorly drained soils; canker and leaf spot—maintain good air circulation and avoid overwatering.
Propagation
- By seed (sown fresh or stratified), root cuttings, or suckers.
- Seeds benefit from cold stratification (60–120 days) and can be slow to germinate.
Landscape uses
- Specimen tree, naturalizing, native woodland edge, wildlife: fruits feed birds and small mammals.
